IEC 61850: Often referred to as the language of substations, this protocol is a powerful, object-oriented standard used for high-speed, real-time communication. Its reliability and speed make it ideal for the critical, real-time data exchange needed between the OPS control system and the electrical equipment. 

Modbus: This is a reliable and widely adopted industrial protocol. Modbus is used for communicating between various devices. The communication goes from the master controller to individual sensors and monitoring units. Modbus is considered a workhorse for robust data transfer. Thus, it is essential for many parts of the OPS system.

Several key factors need to be considered before taking any actions towards transitioning to the Onshore Power Supply. It is crucial to assess the current situation and conditions in the port. That includes:

The Assessment of the Electrical Infrastructure

These standards are not limited only the electrical parameters for safe power transfer. They define the communication protocols, safety interlocks, as well as testing procedures that must be implemented.  

Compliance with IEC 80005 standards facilitates the interoperability between ships and the port infrastructure worldwide. It is necessary to have early involvement of classification societies & regulatory authorities during the planning phase. With streamlined approvals, a lot of risks are being reduced, while it is ensured that the installation meets national safety requirements and international standards.

In previous discussions, we’ve highlighted the importance of Onshore Power Supply (OPS). OPS is essential for the safe connection of ships with land-based power supply while the ship is at berth with main & auxiliary engines turned off. Thus, OPS plays a crucial role in port sustainability.  It is important to understand that this essential technology is governed by the IEC 80005 standard series.

Local Operations: The On-Site Control Hub

In the very heart of the system lies the Local Operations unit. It is often housed within a robust container, and it serves as the primary control hub. The Local Operation Unit typically consists of a PLC, HMI, and essential switching & control components. Before its activation, rigorous safety procedures and tests are performed to ensure flawless operation.

Communication between the ship and the OPS system adheres to the IEC 80005-2 standard. It ensures seamless & secure data exchange. On-site personnel can use the local system for immediate resolution of issues such as power outages or connection loss. Local alarms and signals alert the operator to any issues. Regular maintenance execution is performed locally.

The Remote Control & Monitoring System is powered by a sophisticated cloud-based application. The platform allows operators to monitor & control the system remotely. It collects & stores power usage data, and offers a clear real-time overview of power distribution. The system enables coordination between local containers and an integrated system of alarms & warnings with local signalization. Remote control & monitoring system allows storing all operation logs in the cloud.

Onshore Power Supply (OPS)

Electricity has a crucial role to play in addressing decarbonization across many industries. Shipping is no exception as well. There’s a growing need for a change in the power supply of vessels such as ferries, tankers, bulk carriers, container ships, cruisers, and many others. Along with environmental concerns and regulatory compliance around the world, there are clear economic benefits from the technology that has allowed ships to plug into the local electrical grid while docked at port. This alternative technology that we are talking about is the Onshore power supply. 

What is an Onshore Power Supply OPS?

OPS is a system that enables electrical power for the ships docked at port terminals from the shore-side electrical grid. It significantly reduces pollutant emissions and greenhouse gases while the ship is at berth. Along with the reduction of carbon emissions for both the vessel and port environment, Onshore Power Supply (OPS) also reduces noise, lowers costs, and enhances the working conditions for seafarers aboard the vessel. 

A typical OPS installation requires a building that houses the necessary technical equipment, which usually includes switchgear, transformers, and frequency converters. This equipment is used to adapt the shore’s electrical characteristics, such as voltage and frequency, to match those of the ship.

Based on the situational analyses, we can offer a customizable solution for OPS, consisting of Ehouse and electrical equipment tailored to meet the demands of the port. There are 5 different types of OPS systems based on the specific port requirements and vessel types. When deciding on the OPS type, certain factors such as power demand, infrastructure investment, and environmental regulations should be considered.

Onshore Power Supply System Types:

High Voltage Shore Connection (HVSC): HVSC systems supply power to ships at high voltages. They are ideal for HVSC systems to supply power to ships at high voltages. Voltage Levels: 6.6 kV, 11 kV or above.

Low Voltage Shore Connection (LVSC): LVSC systems supply power to ships at low voltage (400-690 V). These systems are suitable for smaller vessels such as ferries, cruise ships, and smaller cargo ships. Voltage Levels: 400-690V.

Hybrid OPS offers a balance between grid power reliability and renewable energy integration. Applications: Combine power from the local grid, renewable energy sources (such as solar and wind), and energy storage systems (such as batteries). Voltage Levels: Common voltage levels include 400V AC for distribution within the port and 11 kV or higher for connection to the grid.

Direct Current (DC) OPS System supplies ships with direct current (DC) power instead of alternating current (AC). Applications: Used for ships with DC onboard systems or when integrating renewable energy sources that generate DC power. Voltage levels: Common voltage levels include 400V DC for distribution within the port and higher voltages (e.g., 1 kV or more) for connection to the grid or renewable energy sources. 

Mobile OPS Systems are portable or temporary systems that can be deployed to provide shore power to ships in locations without permanent OPS infrastructure. Applications: Ideal for use in ports where OPS is not yet installed or during temporary operations. Voltage Levels: Any required voltage level, usually low voltage
